Jembrana, 1 April 2022 <\/strong>\u2013 Project STOP with the Jembrana Government, Jembrana Traditional Village Council (MDA) and the community in Perancak, Air Kuning and Yeh Kuning village carried out a beach cleanup activity. The event was also attended by the Head of Waste Management at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves), as part of the World Water Day which falls on March 22. Project STOP, an initiative co-founded by Borealis and SYSTEMIQ and supported by strategic partners the Government of Norway, the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, Nestl\u00e9, Borouge, and Siegwerk; creates comprehensive, economically sustainable, circular waste management systems in areas of high plastic leakage, including Jembrana Regency in the northwest coast of Bali Island.<\/p>\n

The beach cleanup activity in Jembrana took place from March 9 to April 1, 2022, with the theme: \u201cMaintaining and Utilizing the Ocean for Life to Increase Tourism Through Clean Beaches.\u201d This initiative aims to increase public awareness on the importance of maintaining environmental cleanliness and handling waste in coastal areas, as well as encourage the community to protect water sources, including the ocean from plastic waste.<\/p>\n

During the cleanup, 300 volunteers from government representatives, community groups, and students were involved in cleaning 5 kilometers of beach areas at Perancak, Air Kuning and Yeh Kuning, and managed to collect approximately 15 tonnes of waste. In addition, this activity applies work safety regulations and health protocols for every volunteer involved. The cleanup also provided with the BeachTech cleaning machine with support from the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, manufactured by K\u00e4ssbohrer Gel\u00e4ndefahrzeug AG, a German company, to cleanup plastic and other types of waste, minimizing the human contact with hazardous materials and operates hand-in-hand with manual cleanup.<\/p>\n

We hope that this initiative can be carried out regularly and contribute to overcoming the challenges of waste management, including plastic waste. Jembrana Regent, I Nengah Tamba on his remarks said, \u201cwe really appreciate this activity from Project STOP. I hope that the community will start to implement waste management from their homes and continue the cleanup activities regularly.\u201d The regent also invited the participants to commit in maintaining clean environment for cleaner Jembrana. \u201cThe successful regency is where the community can manage their waste properly. About Project STOP<\/strong><\/p>\n

Launched in 2017 by Borealis and SYSTEMIQ, Project STOP (STop Ocean Plastics) works hand-in-hand with city governments to create effective circular waste management systems in high-pollution areas of Southeast Asia. The initiative supports cities with technical expertise to achieve zero-leakage of waste, increase recycling, build economically sustainable programs, creating new jobs and reducing the harmful impact of mismanaged waste on public health, tourism, and fisheries. To date, Project STOP has stopped more than 20,000 tonnes of waste from polluting nature and given employment to more than 200 waste workers. While the first city partnership was established in 2018 in Muncar, Project STOP also operates two additional city partnerships, in Pasuruan Regency, also on the island of Java, and Jembrana Regency, on the north coast of Bali. Project STOP\u2019s strategic partners include the Norwegian Government,\u00a0 NOVA Chemicals, Borouge, Nestl\u00e9 the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, and Siegwerk. Project STOP\u2019s success is in large part thanks to these collaborations as well as its close partnership with local and national government offices in Indonesia, including the National Ministry for Environment and Forestry (KLHK) which it has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs (CMMAI) and the Regency governments in the regions it works. STOP now has a team of 40 committed environmental leaders.<\/p>\n
